Impressive in their own right these rock-hewn temples and monasteries lie just 30 km away from Aurangabad city. They contain elaborate facades and exquisitely adorned interiors. These structures represent the three ancient religious faiths: Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. In total, there are 34 cave temples and can be divided into three groups belonging roughly to three periods: Mahayana Buddhism (550-750 AD) 12 caves, Hinduism (600-875 AD) 17 caves and Jainism (800-1000 AD) 5 caves. Twenty two more caves, dedicated to Shiva, are recently discovered. Kailash temple, the central attraction at Ellora, is the most remarkable. Chiselled by hand from a single massive rock, it includes a gateway, pavillion, courtyard, vestibule, sanctum sanctorum and tower. It took over five centuries for the Hindu, Buddhist and Jain monks to chisel out these monasteries, temples, and chapels and decorate them with remarkable imagination and detail. These caves run North-South and take on the Golden Radiance of the late afternoon sun. In the evening drive back to hotel for overnight stay at hotel.
Today after breakfast we will take you on the full day excursion to Ajanta Caves: Nestling in the inner fold of the Sahyadri hills, 100 kms from Aurangabad in the shape of a mammoth horse- shoe, are 30 rock caves of Ajanta, dating from 2nd century BC. The caves were discovered in the year 1819 by a group of British officers. It took around 600 years to create and carve the marvelous statues in these caves with little more than a hammer and chisel. Ajanta, once the retreat of the Buddhist monastic orders features several "chaityas" and viharas. The exquisite paintings and sculptures of Buddha's life belong to the Mahayana period. It is followed by the Elephanta Caves boat cruise from Gateway of India. The caves are at the top of a gentle stairway, which begins almost immediately where the ferry wharf hits dry land. Other attractions would be the Prince Wales Museum & Marine Drive which runs along the shore of the Arabian Sea from Nariman Point past Chowpatty Beach to the foot of Malabar Hill. Later after finishing our sightseeing tour of mumbai we drive to International Airport to catch the flight back home.
